Hospital MEP isn't an extension of commercial MEP — it's a different discipline. NFPA 99 healthcare codes, hospital-grade isolation transformers, infection-control airflow patterns, redundancy expectations measured against patient outcomes. After completing MEP for over a dozen Sri Lankan hospitals — including Karapitiya, multiple private and government tertiary care facilities — here's how we approach the work.

What makes this vertical different

Critical power redundancy — ICUs, operating theatres, dialysis units, neonatal care — none of these can lose power for the 8 seconds it takes a generator to come online. Hospital-grade UPS sized for true full load, not nameplate. Tested annually under fault conditions.
Infection-control airflow — Operating theatre laminar flow, isolation room negative pressure, pharmacy clean rooms — all designed to maintain pressure differentials under varying door-opening scenarios. Failure modes considered, not just normal operation.
Medical gas pipelines — Oxygen, nitrous oxide, medical air, vacuum, anaesthetic gas scavenging — installed to ISO 7396-1 (or HTM 02-01 equivalent), pressure-tested, oxygen-cleaned, with valve box layouts optimised for clinical workflow.
HVAC for sensitive equipment — MRI rooms (RF shielding plus precise temperature control), CT scanners, linear accelerators, blood banks, vaccine storage — each has its own envelope of tolerance.
Infection control during construction — Renovating an MEP scope in an active hospital requires ICRA (Infection Control Risk Assessment) compliance. Negative pressure on work zones, HEPA-filtered exhaust, scheduled around clinical activity.

How we approach it

Code-first design — We start every hospital project with NFPA 99, HTM equivalents, and Sri Lanka's Ministry of Health requirements. The design follows the code, not the other way around.
N+1 redundancy as default — Every system that touches patient care: redundant components, automatic failover, tested under fault conditions before handover.
Commissioning to clinical scenarios — We don't just commission to ASHRAE — we run scenario tests: ICU full load + simultaneous OR demand, infectious patient isolation room with door open, OT during a power failure. Documented results.
Lifecycle planning, not project planning — Hospitals are 30-50 year buildings. We design MEP for component replacements, expansion capacity, future technology (more imaging, more electronics, more cooling load).
Service contracts with biomedical liaison — Our AMC for hospitals coordinates with the biomedical engineering team. We don't just service the chiller — we make sure the chiller's behaviour doesn't interfere with the MRI's calibration.
